Flight 93 makes it’s last normal communication with air traffic control. A minute from now the hijackers will take control of the cockpit. Meanwhile, Tom Burnett is calling is wife Deena to tell her that his plane has been hijacked. Tom wasn’t supposed to be on this flight, but his business in New York ended early and he was able to take an earlier flight out of town. She’s surprised to get his call from his cell phone, since she knows cell phone use isn’t allowed once in the air.
DEENA: Are you in the air?
TOM: Yes, yes, just listen. Our airplane has been hijacked. It’s United Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco. We are in the air. The hijackers have already knifed a guy. One of them has a gun. They’re telling us there’s a bomb on board. Please call the authorities.
Tom says he will call back and hangs up. Deena doesn’t have time to tell him about the World Trade Center, but she does write down everything he says.
