We Don’t Know Nearly Enough About Cannabis and Its Effects

Large Study Links Cannabis Use to Sleep Disruption, Especially Among Heavy Users (sciencealert.com)

We spent all these years saying, “Legalize Pot! It’s safe! Legalize Pot!” without having done any widespread tests to see if it really was safe.

Now we’re paying the price.

Getting roughly eight hours of sleep is crucial for most of us to avoid feeling like a zombie at work the next day. While some people use caffeine to keep alert during the day, others have turned to cannabis as a sleep aid.

Now, a large-scale study on the effects of cannabis on sleep duration and quality has called into question the drug's reputation as a beneficial pre-slumber choice.

Data on cannabis use and sleep duration for 21,729 adults were obtained from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a cross-sectional survey designed by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This Is a Risk, But...

Like so many things in climatology and astronomy, we really don’t know enough to predict with any kind of accuracy.

A "Mini-Ice Age" Could Hit Earth By 2030, Scientists Warn - Science world (sciencenatures.com)

They’re talking about an upcoming “Maunder Minimum”, which based upon sunspot activity may be happening soon. Or it may not. We just don’t know. Also, we don’t really know enough to even accurately predict sunspot activity. The sun has been very quiet for the last several years, which is why we’re having this discussion. But it could get noisy again tomorrow. And while that would be surprising, it probably wouldn’t be more surprising than the low sunspot period we’re in now.

According to the model, the two magnetic waves will become increasingly offset during Cycle 25, which peaks in 2022. During Cycle 26 between 2030 and 2040, the waves will become out of sync, causing reduction in solar activity by as much as 60 percent.

“In cycle 26, the two waves exactly mirror each other — peaking at the same time but in opposite hemispheres of the Sun,” Zharkovareportedly said in 2015 while conducting a previous research on the phenomenon. “Their interaction will be disruptive, or they will nearly cancel each other. We predict that this will lead to the properties of a 'Maunder minimum'.”

Although Zharkova claimed 97 percent accuracy for the model that corresponds to previous mini ice ages, she did warn that her model could not be used as proof of a future mini ice age, partly because of global warming. The new research paper on the findings was published this year in Astronomy & Geophysics.

“I hope global warning will be overridden by this effect, giving humankind and the Earth 30 years to sort out our pollution,” Zharkova told Sky News, adding that any possible downward impact on global warming will last until 2050s when the Sun's two magnetic waves become active again. “We have to be sorted by that time and prepare everything on Earth for the next big solar activity.”

We just don’t know. Could get a little warmer. Could stay the same. Could get a little cooler. Could get a lot cooler. Make your picks and place your bets.

I’ll Miss Anne Rice Too

Interview with a Vampire Author Anne Rice Dead at 80 | PEOPLE.com

A little bit crazy, and way too many Vampire books. Her Sleeping Beauty series was incredibly odd.

But still, a very prolific writer, who wrote what she wanted to write and damn whatever people thought of it. The first few Vampire books are fantastic. I may try to pick up the series again.

Anne Rice, the beloved author behind the 1976 novel Interview with the Vampire, has died. She was 80.

On Saturday evening, Anne's son, Christopher Rice, announced her death in a social media statement shared on Facebook.

Christopher said his mother died of complications from a stroke and will be buried in a family mausoleum at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans in a private ceremony.

A public memorial is also planned for sometime next year in the Louisiana city, Christopher added.

In his Facebook statement, Christoper wrote that Anne "left us almost 19 years to the day my father, her husband Stan, died."

Bush v. Gore is resolved by the Supreme Court

Bush v. Gore, 531 U.S. 98 (2000), was a decision of the United States Supreme Court on December 12, 2000, that settled a recount dispute in Florida's 2000 presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore.

On December 8, the Florida Supreme Court had ordered a statewide recount of all undervotes, over 61,000 ballots that the vote tabulation machines had missed. The Bush campaign immediately asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stay the decision and halt the recount. Justice Antonin Scalia, convinced that all the manual recounts being performed in Florida's counties were illegitimate, urged his colleagues to grant the stay immediately.[1] On December 9, the five conservative justices on the Court granted the stay for Bush, with Scalia citing "irreparable harm" that could befall Bush, as the recounts would cast "a needless and unjustified cloud" over Bush's legitimacy. In dissent, Justice John Paul Stevens wrote that "counting every legally cast vote cannot constitute irreparable harm."[1] Oral arguments were scheduled for December 11.

In a per curiam decision, the Court first ruled 7–2 (Justices Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissenting), strictly on equal protection grounds, that the recount be stopped. Specifically, the use of different standards of counting in different counties violated the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution. (The case had also been argued on the basis of Article II jurisdictional grounds, which found favor with only Justices Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and William Rehnquist.) Second, the Court ruled 5–4 against the remedy, proposed by Justices Stephen Breyer and David Souter, of sending the case back to Florida to complete the recount using a uniform statewide standard before the scheduled December 18 meeting of Florida's electors in Tallahassee.[1] The majority held that no alternative method could be established within the discretionary December 12 "safe harbor" deadline set by Title 3 of the United States Code (3 U.S.C.), § 5, which the Florida Supreme Court had stated that the Florida Legislature intended to meet.[2] That deadline arrived two hours after the release of the Court's decision. The Court, stating that not meeting the "safe harbor" deadline would therefore violate the Florida Election Code, rejected an extension of the deadline.

The Media’s Disinterest in Hunter Biden Is Almost as Big of a Scandal as Their Fake Stories on Russia

WATCH: Psaki Snaps After Being Asked About Book On Hunter Biden’s Laptop, Chinese Investments | The Daily Wire

“And the second question is: My colleague Miranda Devine has a new book out called the ‘Laptop From Hell,’ and I was hoping that you could confirm that the laptop is indeed authentic and not Russian disinformation, as you seemed to suggest on Twitter last year,” he continued.

“Well, on the first, the President’s son is not an employee of the federal government, so I’d point you to his representatives,” Psaki said. “And as it relates to the book, I have neither had the time nor interest in exploring or reading the book. Go ahead, Tina.”

The reporter tried to get Psaki to answer the question but Psaki repeatedly talked over him, refused to answer, and insisted on calling on a different reporter.

Move on. Liberals always want to move on when things get uncomfortable. We were told that during the Monica Lewinski scandal. Hillary famously asked us “what difference, at this point, does it make” when asked about her failures in Benghazi.

Now Team Biden wants to move on from Hunter. The problem is that Hunter is still Joe’s son, so I don’t think we’ll be moving on any time soon.

That Took Way Too Long

Chris Cuomo Out At SiriusXM Radio Show | The Daily Wire

Cuomo announced his exit from the network on Monday afternoon via Twitter.

“The way my time ended at CNN was hard. While I have a thick skin, I also have a family, for whom the past week has been extraordinarily difficult. So, right now, I have to take a step back and focus on what comes next,” wrote Cuomo. “That means I will no longer be doing my SiriusXM radio show.”

The statement did not immediately specify whether leaving the radio show had been his decision or the network’s. One commentator referred to his statement as “[t]he old I’m being fired but they’re allowing me to make it look like a resignation apology.”

I doubt that this was by choice. I think the network told him, “we’ll let you quit, but if you don’t you’re getting fired.”

The schadenfreude here is delicious.

Hard to Argue With This Statement

Biden to Uyghurs: Drop Dead (freebeacon.com)

The reasons are equally comical and demented. Kerry is lusting for a Nobel Peace Prize for his climate work, which requires the cooperation of the Chinese. To hell with the Uyghurs so long as Kerry gets the international accolades that his failed presidential run and bumbling tenure as secretary of state didn’t give him.

Xinjiang is home to roughly half of the world’s supply of polysilicon, a raw material used to produce solar panels. A ban on its importation would send a message to the Chinese communists that the United States won’t tolerate its barbarous behavior.

Merkley deserves credit for his unwavering support for the bill. The same can’t be said for his Democratic colleagues: House leadership won’t allow any deliberations on China-related legislation this week, despite empty assurances from the White House that it supports the bill’s swift passage.

We were warned about this last year.

But you voted for this anyway. I told you so.

Almost Everything Said by the Left About Project Veritas and James O’Keefe Is a Lie

O’Keefe asks them if they’ve heard of Project Veritas and reveals that he’s the CEO. They proceed to call him an ‘insurrectionist’ and make false claims about him, including that he ‘edits’ his videos.

When he asks them to substantiate these claims, to find out why they are saying it, they either clam up or can’t cite any proof whatsoever. It’s just insults, like always.

EU Extends Censorship Campaign. Sad!

Europe extends its coronavirus "disinformation" surveillance campaign (reclaimthenet.org)

Values and Transparency Vice President VÄ›ra Jourová said: “The pandemic is not over yet, this is why we want platforms to intensify efforts in addressing COVID-19 disinformation, including on vaccines and in all EU languages. We also expect the platforms to translate lessons learned from the COVID monitoring program into a stronger monitoring framework for the new anti-disinformation Code.”

“Disinformation” like “natural immunity” works better than vaccines. That vaccine effectiveness wanes very quickly over time. That the vaccines are exceptionally dangerous to male children.

These are the kinds of things officials want to censor.

This is very sad.

Mask mandates are harming our childrens' development (nypost.com)

Parents tell me they feel completely at a loss about how to effect sane change. The teacher has no control, the principal has no power. Few know their superintendent. The mayor is out to lunch, and, anyway, in New York the school-masking rules come from the top. Gov. Kathy Hochul has stuck toddlers as young as 2 in masks indefinitely. Our geriatric governor, far more at risk of hospitalization or death due to COVID than a child, is frequently seen maskless in crowds herself.

Children need interaction. They need to be able to see and hear. And most of all, they need to not be scared of everything and everyone around them. We have failed an entire generation of students, and I don’t know if they’ll ever recover.

We can go to concerts, dinner, Broadway shows. But being in the same room as the population least at risk for a poor COVID-19 outcome is forbidden. It’s because our leaders have decided that concerts, dinners, Broadway shows matter while parental involvement in kids’ education just doesn’t. They pretend there are no consequences to this. There are.

I’ll be honest.

Reading this piece made me cry. I see what she’s talking about in my own kids. And I feel so helpless, just like so many parents. We have got to save our children.

This Might Be the Best Thing DeSantis Has Done Yet

Doc Suspended Over Biden Vax Mandate. DeSantis: He’s Reinstated, ‘Freedom Has A Home Here In Florida’ | The Daily Wire

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) announced Monday that a doctor who was suspended from his job due to a vaccine mandate implemented by President Joe Biden has been reinstated.

“Jeff, a Florida doctor I met in Brandon at the Special Session bill signing, was suspended from his job due to Biden’s mandate,” DeSantis announced. “He has now been reinstated due to our efforts to stop this heavy-handed federal mandate.”

“Freedom has a home here in Florida,” the governor added.

Due to Lockdowns

So, the question has to be, did lockdowns actually save any lives? Hard to believe the answer is yes.

47,000 More People Died of This Disease in 2020 Due to Lockdowns, World Health Organization Reports - Foundation for Economic Education (fee.org)

And this doesn’t even count all the people who died because elective surgeries were canceled, or just because they were afraid to get out and go to their doctors.

And this is just malaria, not anything else.

Governments around the world took drastic measures in 2020 in hopes of slowing the spread of COVID-19, in many cases locking down economies and confining people to their homes for months on end. The extent to which these measures actually helped contain the COVID-19 pandemic is highly dubious. But the death toll from the unintended consequences of lockdowns continues to mount.

Has anyone done a deep analysis on excess deaths in 2020 and 2021? I’d love to see one. It would prove once and for all whether or not we have been right to be scared of this virus.

Millions of Kids Will Be Depressed Because This Means That Baseball Bat Manufacturers Can’t Be Liable for Broken Windows

Nevada Supreme Court Finds Gun Makers Not Liable for Las Vegas Massacre - The Truth About Guns

Yes, that is a 100% apt analogy.

Somehow it seems newsworthy when the law, as written, is applied as written and intended. The Nevada Supreme Court has found that a group of gun manufacturers and retailers are not liable in the Las Vegas shooting that took place at a music festival in October of 2017.

As Courthouse News reports, the Court ruled that . . .

…that state law grants immunity to gun makers and sellers from lawsuits pertaining to the 2017 mass shooting at a Las Vegas concert.

The court ruled the text of the law and the legislative history shield the gun companies from most liability, even if the guns at issue are proven to be illegal. The justices said the law could be changed by the Legislature but could not be altered by the judiciary.

Yes, the sad point here is that this is actually newsworthy. It should not be worth mentioning when the law makes sense and its application makes sense.

They Were Buying Access to Power and the Power Is Gone

Ethics Experts Alarmed By 93% Decrease In Clinton Foundation Donations Since $250 Million Peak In 2009  | The Daily Caller

“Money was pouring in when Hillary Clinton was a senior official and a candidate for president. The fact that foundation donors received special access to the Secretary of State isn’t surprising, nor is the fall in foundation funding after her 2016 election loss. Many people thought people were supporting the former president, but it really looks like they were cozying up to who they thought was going to be the future president — a situation that can’t be repeated,” the POGO General Counsel told the Daily Caller.

“Now, with ethics concerns raised about Mnuchin and Kushner, as well as judges, it is vital that Congress put politics aside and pass an ethics reform package for all three branches of government. Congress must eliminate conflicts of interest, restrict special access, prevent trading on insider knowledge, and stop public servants who cash in for personal or private gain. Recent surveys show that corruption is a major public concern, but with the foxes guarding the henhouse, I’m unsure who will step forward to fix the problem,” said Amey.

A Non-apology Apology

SF Restaurant Slammed After Kicking Out Dining Cops Because They Had Guns, Later Apologizes | The Daily Wire

Co-Owner Rachel Sillcocks wrote on Instagram, “Our restaurant is a safe space — particularly for queer and bipoc individuals. Furthermore, the fact that they were in uniform with multiple weapons on them made our staff uncomfortable, and potentially other guests, so they were asked to leave. We would happily welcome them off-duty, out of uniform and without weapons.”

“We’re sorry that the decision upset you,” she continued.  “We understand your perspective and we hope you consider ours.”

“We’re sorry that the decision upset you”. So, see, it’s still the police’s fault for being upset. They’re just sorry that it happened.

If you have a problem with armed police in your business, maybe you should re-think whether or not you should be running a business.

Social media slammed the owners for their actions; the San Francisco Chronicle reported, “By Sunday, the restaurant had received a flood of negative reviews on Yelp, with hundreds of reviewers criticizing it for the Friday incident …”

San Francisco Police Chief William Scott responded to Sillcocks’ post, tweeting, “San Francisco Community engagement is a core principle of SFPD’s 21st century police reforms, and we are intentional about asking our officers to support local businesses and get to know those they’re sworn to safeguard.”

The police didn’t do anything wrong.

This Is a Good First Step

U.S. Announces Official Diplomatic Boycott Of Beijing Olympics | The Daily Wire

I’ve been opposed to a full boycott, so this is the start to a useful compromise. But need to do more.

Many will accuse Biden of being weak against the Chinese again, and that’s a valid criticism, but boycotting the entire games is just a stupid idea.

On Monday, the United States government announced an official diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics in response to human rights violations committed by the Chinese Communist Party. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki made the announcement during her Monday appearance before the White House pool.

“The Biden administration will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, given the PRC’s ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity,” Psaki told media.

I’ll want to see if Biden does anything further or if this is as far as it goes.

Biden’s Latest COVID Rule Takes Effect Requiring Testing For Entrance To U.S., Including Americans | The Daily Wire

President Joe Biden’s latest COVID-19 requirement demanding that all travelers into the U.S. including Americans submit a negative test within 24 hours of departure, regardless of vaccination status, takes effect Monday.

The announcement follows the president’s coronavirus winter strategy speech on Thursday that introduced the upcoming requirement.

“Early next week, the United States will tighten pre-departure testing protocols by requiring all inbound international travelers to test within one day of departure globally, regardless of nationality or vaccination status. This tighter testing timeline provides an added degree of public health protection as scientists continue to assess the Omicron variant,” the plan stated.

Now, this next bit does tick me off.

International travelers to the U.S. will also be required to be fully vaccinated. The Biden administration also banned air travel from South Africa and neighboring countries over concerns regarding the recently-discovered Omicron variant.

What does “fully vaccinated” mean? Does it mean booster shots? Does it mean people will have to have shots for new variants? What a ridiculous world we live in today.

Unfortunately, Too Many Companies Won’t Follow Suit

AdventHealth Drops Jab Mandate For Employees “Due To Recent Decisions By The Federal Courts” (lifezette.com)

According to reports, AdventHealth has suspended their jab mandate for workers. In a memo sent out to employees earlier in December, the company’s approximately 83,000 employees will no longer be beholden to the COVID shot.

The memo sent out by AdventHealth seemingly references recent court decisions that put a stop to the Biden administration’s effort to mandate the jab via government overreach, writing “due to recent decisions by the federal courts to block the CMS vaccine mandate, we are suspending all vaccination requirements prescribed by this mandate.”

They’re based in Florida, too, which might have also been a factor in making this decision.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a statement regarding AdventHealth’s recent decision, affording the company accolades for complying with the state’s laws, saying “We welcome AdventHealth’s decision to comply with state law to protect Floridians’ jobs and to ensure our state’s healthcare system can continue functioning smoothly.”

Sadly, too many companies continue to take the easy route, following the mandate even though it looks less and less likely to win in court.

This Is a Sign We Need to Re-Think This Whole Vaccine Effort

You can’t expect the entire world to get a new vaccine every three months because some new odd variant has appeared.

Gottlieb: Vaccines against specific COVID variants may not work with others | One America News Network (oann.com)

According to former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb, variant-specific vaccines may not work against new variations of COVID. During an interview Sunday, he said there’s reason to believe developed vaccines won’t work well against the full component of different variants.

“While Omicron may become a threat in U.S., the absolute risk from it right now is very low,” Gottlieb noted. “Many people will still become infected by Delta and may find that delta natural immunity doesn’t protect well against Omicron.

“So, the question right now is whether or not this is re-infecting people who have Delta immunity and haven’t been vaccinated, or whether it’s going to also infect people who have who have been vaccinated,” Gottlieb stated. “There’s some reason to believe that vaccines could be more protective than just immunity acquired through natural infection from Delta. That’s going to be a critical question we need to figure out in the coming weeks because we have some important policy decisions that we need to make, depending on the answer.”

Yes, policy decisions like “maybe we abandon this whole plan”. That would be a good place to start.

Remember, no one has died from Omicron yet.

Israeli Prime Minister urges countries to take a hardline stance on Iran | One America News Network (oann.com)

Yeah. The problem is that they don’t like you, and they’re scared of Iran. So, that’s not going to happen.

Israel tapped the U.S. and other countries to take a hardline stance against Iran as the countries deliberate reviving the failed nuclear deal.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett urged countries to be wary when dealing with Iran, stressing Iran cannot continue to violate agreements while trying to negotiate new ones.

Bennett’s sentiments came after deliberations in Vienna ended in a stalemate with U.S. and foreign negotiators reporting Iran had taken a hardline stance of its own.

They already have.

The Democratic Party Supports Slavery

Maybe it’s time they dug out all their old white robes and hoods again.

House Democrats Won’t Schedule Vote on Bill to Sanction Chinese Slave Labor (freebeacon.com)

Democratic leaders are walking back their promise to hold a vote this week in the House on legislation that would sanction China’s use of slave labor and ban the import of goods made using it, according to the legislative chamber’s vote schedule.

Democratic House Rules chair Jim McGovern (D., Mass.) promised last week after a meeting with Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) that the House would hold a vote this week on the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, a long-stalled human rights bill that has emerged as a flashpoint in U.S.-China relations. While McGovern indicated on Thursday that the bill would proceed, it is not listed on the House’s official floor schedule.

Stupid to believe they ever had any plans to keep their promises. They don’t care about slavery in China.

Democrats in both the House and Senate blocked the bill last week from being included in the annual defense spending package, sparking accusations the Biden administration is quietly lobbying congressional allies to oppose the measure. Climate czar John Kerry, among others, is reportedly concerned the bill would upset China at a critical juncture in the administration’s efforts to ink a climate accord with the CCP.

I think eliminating genocide and slavery is a bit more important than making sure we get solar panels from the CCP.

The ongoing delay is fueling accusations that Democrats are slow-playing the bill at the Biden administration’s request. The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act—which would prohibit imports from the Xinjiang region of China, where Uyghurs have been subjected to forced labor, mass surveillance, and detention camps—passed the Senate unanimously in July but has stalled in the House, even though it is widely supported by Republicans and the human rights advocacy community.

I don’t care where the request is coming from. Whoever it is needs to be drawn and quartered. This is pathetically weak on our part. Even the bill isn’t that strong, but at least it’s something. To show that we don’t even have the strength to pass this wimpy bill is telling the Chinese that they can walk all over us and we won’t do anything.

Are we a Superpower or not? I’m beginning to think the answer is “not”.

This Is Purely an Act of Aggression by China and Must Have an Appropriate Response

‘Setting Off Alarm Bells’: U.S. Officials Scramble As China Pushes To Build Atlantic Military Base | The Daily Wire

China has no business having a military base in the Atlantic. It’s only purpose would be for aggressive acts against the U.S. and NATO. We must make it clear that we will not accept this.

Communist China has officials in the Biden administration scrambling as classified U.S. intelligence reportedly shows that China is pushing to build a military base on the Atlantic Ocean, which poses a major threat to U.S. national security.

“Classified American intelligence reports suggest China intends to establish its first permanent military presence on the Atlantic Ocean in the tiny Central African country of Equatorial Guinea,” The Wall Street Journal reported. “[U.S. officials] said the reports raise the prospect that Chinese warships would be able to rearm and refit opposite the East Coast of the U.S.—a threat that is setting off alarm bells at the White House and Pentagon.”

Equatorial Guinea has the right to do whatever suits them, of course, but we need to make it excruciatingly clear what a bad idea that would be. Wars have been started over less.

I’m Not Sure That I Agree With This

In fact, I’ve often wondered why Democrats have never tried to codify Roe v. Wade into law.

Klobuchar Pushes Abortion Law, Dems May Regret It - Victory Girls Blog

And when asked, Klobuchar left the door open to packing the court to get what the left wants – but acknowledges that it’s too late for this particular case.

Pressed on if she is more open to packing the court amid the abortion conversation, Klobuchar said she has “always been open to looking at the numbers of justices on the Court,” but contended that “most sane route to gets done right now would be to bring this up before the U.S. Senate to codify Roe v. Wade into law.”

There is no way that the Senate gets 60 votes to block a filibuster on this bill. And the Democrat “majority” in the Senate is definitely not a majority when it comes to abortion on demand. Once again, we find Joe Manchin, a Democrat who would like to keep his Senate seat in a deep red state, being the stumbling block to all of the progressive left’s hopes and dreams of killing for convenience’s sake. So while Klobuchar is busy paying lip service to the left, she knows perfectly well that the WHPA is dead on arrival in the Senate.

I think this is overly optimistic. There’s definitely not 60 votes for such a bill, but there might be 60 votes for cloture. I think there’s almost certainly 50+1 votes. And the Democrats might decide that this is the hill to die on for killing the filibuster once and for all.

Frankly, this is the route the left should pursue. I personally don’t think the Court is going to overturn Roe, but I don’t think the left is going to be happy with the decision, regardless. It seems clear that the Court will continue to allow more and more “reasonable” restrictions upon abortion, tearing up Roe bit by bit rather than overturning it explicitly.
