Despite the Crap We’ve Put Them Through, the UK Is Still Our Best Ally

BoJo: UK honchos a no-go to Beijing Olympics – HotAir

The diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics picked up speed overnight as three US allies joined Joe Biden. Boris Johnson became the latest to join, announcing a few minutes ago that the UK would not send any ministers to the Olympiad in protest of China’s genocidal policies. That would be “effectively” the same as the US diplomatic boycott, Johnson said:

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says no U.K. government minister will attend the Beijing Winter Olympics, calling it “effectively” a diplomatic boycott.

China’s annoyed. Good. Let them try to kick us out completely.

The IOC really should just move the event. They won’t. But they should.

Prediction: They Won’t

GOP Congresswoman Tells Woke Corporations Sponsoring Olympics To Call Out China’s Atrocities | The Daily Wire

Rep. Michelle Steel (R-CA) is calling upon the corporate sponsors of the 2022 Winter Olympics to reveal human rights abuses inflicted by the Chinese Communist Party.

I’m glad someone is calling for this, but I doubt it’s going to be successful.

Steel observed that the companies are eager to point out purported social justice issues in the United States. She therefore encouraged executives to do the same with China’s persecution of the Uyghur ethnic minority via “forced sterilizations,” “labor camps,” and “murder.”

Many of the companies who are sponsoring Team USA and the 2022 Winter Olympics felt compelled to speak out over the last year in support of political and social protests. Coca Cola spoke out loudly against laws passed in Georgia. Visa said, “Change starts here” and highlighted their focus on “global acceptance.” Airbnb condemned “racism, bigotry and hate.” But where are your statements against the human rights abuses happening right now in China? How can we support sending our athletes — the best of the best, who have worked so hard for these moments — to a country with a backdrop of abuse and violence?

Ah, but it’s okay for lefties to criticize America. They won’t dare criticize China.

We used to do that sort of thing. We were first in line to scream about human rights abuses around the world. It’s sad. Lefties scream about “greedy capitalists” all the time. And ignore true examples to its. These companies won’t dare criticize China because doing so would cost them too much money

This Is a Good First Step

U.S. Announces Official Diplomatic Boycott Of Beijing Olympics | The Daily Wire

I’ve been opposed to a full boycott, so this is the start to a useful compromise. But need to do more.

Many will accuse Biden of being weak against the Chinese again, and that’s a valid criticism, but boycotting the entire games is just a stupid idea.

On Monday, the United States government announced an official diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics in response to human rights violations committed by the Chinese Communist Party. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki made the announcement during her Monday appearance before the White House pool.

“The Biden administration will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, given the PRC’s ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity,” Psaki told media.

I’ll want to see if Biden does anything further or if this is as far as it goes.

NO!

Beijing Olympics: It's a Travesty to Honor Chinese Fascists – PJ Media

As I said, I stand with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) on this one.

But I will present the case for the other side:

Let’s go with four specific reasons not to let modern-day totalitarians host the Winter Olympics:

1.Beijing has violated all provisions from the UN Genocide Convention with its abhorrent abuse of Uyghurs in Xinjiang province. Dictator Xi Jinping is holding roughly 2 million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in hundreds of clandestine concentration camps and other detention centers. The few who’ve broken free say they were subjected to indoctrination, sexual abuse, and forced sterilization.

2. For going on two years, the brazen CCP categorically refuses to cooperate in any investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic that’s taken nearly 6 million lives on earth. The noxious group has done everything in its power to obfuscate and lie since the pandemic’s earliest days, from erasing whistleblowers’ names from the Internet to blaming the United States.

3. The crackdown on Hongkongers’ freedom is completely inapposite to laws and promises in the 1997 accord, which handed over the island city from the British to Red China. Not only has the CCP squashed any semblance of democracy, they are now arresting anyone that stands in their way.

4: Only a few weeks ago, the tyrannical regime kidnapped their own Olympian, Peng Shuai, after the tennis star accused former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual assault.

I can’t disagree with any of this.

A.J. has a little more to say:

“Boycotting these Olympics is mainly about denying China another global propaganda opportunity. It is also about changing the behavior of the wealthy IOC members who spit on the idea of human rights as China pampers them. China is not a developing country. It has always had the world’s largest population and, after shedding parts of the communist economic model, the fastest growing and polluting economy on earth. The U.S. government should be the main moral counterbalance to modern totalitarians. Be it Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, or today, the free world should not lend legitimacy to genocidal regimes; doing so encourages the IOC and others to continue awarding marquee events and publicity wins to the worst regimes on earth.”

ok.

I don’t disagree at all. And I don’t disagree with the people clamoring for the about Peng Shuai. Communist China seems dedicated to exceeding even the U.S.S.R’s worst offenses.

But our Olympic athletes should not be made to be political pawns. I agree with Cruz, as I said. Let’s go “kick their commie a**es.

I Agree With Cruz

Cruz On Upcoming Beijing Olympics: We Need To ‘Go Over There And Kick Their Commie A**es’ | The Daily Wire

F on this wimpy boycott crap.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told CBS News on Sunday that he does not support a full boycott of the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing because it would punish U.S. athletes who have trained for years to be able to compete in the games and because the U.S. needs to “kick their commie a**es.”

“I’ve been leaning in hard saying we ought to move the Olympics out of China, that’s what we should have done,” Cruz told “Face The Nation” host Margaret Brennan. “The IOC refused to do that. I think it’s a mistake to have a full boycott of the Olympics. You know, Jimmy Carter tried that in the 1970s. All it did was punish a generation of athletes. We’ve got young men and young women, Americans, who spent their whole lives practicing for this moment. I don’t want to punish those young athletes. What we ought to do — I do agree with the notion of a so-called diplomatic boycott — which means we don’t send high ranking cabinet officials over there.”

This is exactly my feeling and has been my feeling since the idea was first floated. Glad that someone is saying. Keep it up, Cruz.

No, No, a Thousand Times No

Tom Cotton Wants Complete Olympic Boycott In 2022 - Victory Girls Blog

I’ve said more times than I can count that the American withdrawal from the Moscow Olympics in 1980 was one of the dumbest decisions of the Carter Presidency (and that’s setting the bar really freaking high). I don’t want Biden to repeat that stupidity.

We went to Berlin in 1936, remember?

We should do the same next year in China. Go there, kick ass, come home.

Don’t make political pawns of American kids who have been training their entire lives for their one shining moment in the sun.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

“Victory” Girls are for it. I will have to put Victory in quotes from here on out. As apparently, they’d rather run than fight.

A diplomatic boycott does send a message, but a total boycott would be a bigger message. But there probably isn’t enough momentum among politicians and athletes for more than this half measure. Team Brandon has demonstrated that they are pretty wimpy on China, and asking the athletes to stand up against China’s human rights abuses is hard to do when it feels so abstract.

Perhaps if they had a concrete example to rally around, like a missing Chinese tennis star, more athletes would consider a boycott on moral grounds. I have no doubt that it would be very difficult, because despite their corruption, the title of “Olympian” does still carry a cachet. I’m not saying it would be easy for the athletes to give up their Olympic dreams, but Tom Cotton is right. We know what is happening in China, and the participation of the United States and other countries who claim they care about human rights provides China with a moral whitewash that they don’t in the least bit deserve.

Wrong.

A Communist Dictatorship Doesn’t Want Anyone to See Their Country. Is Anyone Surprised?

No One Outside Of China Allowed To Attend 2022 Winter Games In Beijing | The Daily Wire

The IOC should step in and say that the games will have to be held elsewhere then.

Oh, wait. There’s a problem with that.

The International Olympic Committee said on Wednesday that the only people allowed to attend the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, China, are those who live in China.

“Tickets will be sold exclusively to spectators residing in China’s mainland, who meet the requirements of the COVID-19 countermeasures,” the IOC said. “Specific requirements on COVID-19 countermeasures for spectators from China’s mainland and the details of ticketing arrangements are under discussion and development, and will be released to the public in due course once they are finalized.”

This is with the full cooperation of the IOC. That’s BS.
