A Piece of Americana Is Disappearing Forever

Sears is shutting its last store in Illinois, its home state (cnbc.com)

The last Sears department store located in the retailer’s home state of Illinois is getting ready to close its doors for good.

The shop, located in Simon Property Group’s Woodfield Mall, is scheduled to shutter on Nov. 14, the company confirmed to CNBC.

A spokesman for the department store chain’s parent company, Transformco, said it will look for ways to revive the space with another tenant because it also manages the real estate.

Sears was part of America when I grew up. There was a Sears in every mall. Everybody got the Sears Catalog. Every kid eagerly thumbed through the Christmas Wish Book when it arrived. They used to host a Christmas sale just for kids to buy gifts for their loved ones. Parents weren’t allowed in the store for a couple hours, and the salespeople were incredibly helpful.

And now. All but gone. Completely gone in their home state.

The Sears Tower. What’s that? Who cares anymore?

Oh that’s right. It’s the Willis Tower now.

I know it’s silly to get sad over a middle class department store, but as I said at the top, there were few things more American than Sears & Roebuck.

I miss you, Sears, even if no one else does.
